January 29, 2008
GOOD NEWS tonight was a phonecall from Jack Gaylord who is back home in his Wellborn house. Thanks Be to God. Shands Hospital, Live Oak was where the ambulance carried him when he ran out of bluff power and couldnt breathe even enuff for Linda to drive him to the VA. They 911'd it and waited in the wheelchair gasping. The ambulance gave him no option. Desperate Jack was unable to make demands.
A week later Jack Gaylord can only give credit where credit is due. His breathing is restored and he thanks God. He and the nurses (especially Yvonne Brimm) had a good time getting him AOK again. So tomorrow he picks up where he left off as an outpatient at L.C. V.A.
Jack's dog "Little Man" is the gladdest of us all.

Cathy Allred's mystery illness had her ambulanced to Shands Gainesville for a week stay and Jack Allred called in two of her daughters( delightful young women) . Cathy's illness felt life threatening and may still be so. Specific diagnosis is illusive still but she is home for bedrest plus R&R aided by presciptions. Your prayers are needed and appreciated.

In Vietnamese BA means Father.  Loi Tran chose "BA" for the first syllable of the name of his new business.  The Trans have a 2 year old son and a one year old daughter . Jaden and Aleigha . The "J" and the "A" make the second syllable.
BAJA GRILL is located behind the US 90 B&B.  It is a low overhead operation where local folks can get hamburgers, fish sandwiches at fair prices. 623-1146. Call ahead orders are most welcome.  Customers can picnic or carry out.
Loi was Bubba, at Wellborn United Methodist Youth fun ten years ago when David Smith was WUMC youth director.Loi was a chubbly little feller, full of vim and vigor and vitality and well grounded in Christianity.  Now he is tall and slim but still full of charm.   His momma is Julia Berry Tran, Dang, Daniels.  The family gathered with friends today because a heart attack took Don Daniels from this world unexpectedly. Loi's grandfather, Rev. Louis Berry, spoke the words of comfort and shared officiating with Rev. Gary Gregory.  May our God comfort those who mourn.

WELLBORN PAWN AND GUN opened six weeks ago.  It occupies a large metal building on CR 137 in view of US90 and also the cement block house next door.   The owners/operators are Charlie and Donna Rosenbaum.  They chose to make Wellborn their home 3 years ago.  Other Rosenbaum business enterprizes have been SR252 & 29th road Country Store and also a Land Clearing business.  The Pawn and Gun shop is what it says but it is also a whole lot more. Charlie is interested in our  hobbies and has stocked hobbyist supplies (remote control models, bows, skate boards, hunters weapons, paint ball equipment, fishing supplies, tee shirts caps and what is your hobby? stuff may be there for you.
On consigment right now there is a  a boat, ATV, a dirt bike and whatever comes his way between my visit and yours.  Estate jewelry is in a locked display case. DVD's are for purchse and/or rent.  The store is neat and orderly and you'll be treated well by Donna, Charlie of Wellborn and Andrea of McAlpin.

Cathy Willson of the Wellborn WHISTLE STOP says she will solve her own problem of having to go 12 miles to get an onion as needed to produce her wonderful deli sandwiches.  When spring comes Cathy plans a Farmers Market with fresh vegies available in the WHISTLE STOP side yard.   She also envisions a flower luncheon in the srping and will invite all the flower growing folks here.  Cathy would love to see an art studio be the next good thing to happen in the building across CR137 from the WHISTLE STOP.  Cathy Collins has that building for rent ($600/month) now that she is working for Poole and doing most of her paperwork at her own home.

Good news is from Ron and Esther Chappel (our very best blog encouragers) Friday Esther gets sprung from SHANDS rehab and comes home to Wellborn. Her hip has healed that well.  Yippy. Much better to celebrate ones birthday at home and that comes January 27.

January, 2007
Random acts of kindness happen today & every day in our hometown.
Here is one!
Bingo Babes and Boys enjoy the game and each other at Wellborn Methodist Fellowship Hall every Wednesday for 2 hours.
Usually after Bingo they take home a tray lunch, like Meals on Wheels only it is their own wheels.
January 16 the WUMC hall is where the AARP Income Tax Preparers 5 day school starts.
Bingo Babes and Boys became displaced and homeless just for the day.   Suzanne and Donald Bridge are the church members who invited Babes and Boys for Bingo to the church hall over a year ago.  Suzanne's best friend is Dolores Davis who lives downtown Wellborn and when she feels well enough Dolores is the Hostess with the Mostest in our hometown.
Dolores felt well enough and she invited the Bingo Babes and Boys to her home for Bingo AND for a Dolores Davis luncheon.  Lucky them!
I wish you could have seen the twinkle in her eye as she told she is calling todays game "Mystery Bingo".  Instead of having winners just choose from a miscellaneous collection of small items displayed on one of the church tables,  Mystery Bingo prizes are attractively wrapped as gifts.  Picture the smiles all around. :-)
Here is another!
Come to think of it the "students" at the tax school are preparing themselves for many hours of kindnesses in helping folks through the income tax season looming ahead.  They set up computers and offer expertise at sites in both Live Oak (at the library Saturdays and the Community Presbyterian Church Tuesdays)and in Lake City too. (364-8396 Linda Young, Coordinator, or 963-5023, G.J. Wilson FYI)

LOST & WANTING TO BE FOUND  2 dogs,  males.  One is little black, with a white chest, answers to Sugar and is a member of   Dolly Perkins (963-2202)multi-dog household in the vicinity of CR137 and 252. The other dog is middlesized and reddish brown and belongs to Aaron Sellers living in the same neighborhood.

There go the buried gas tanks from in front of Wellborn  Convenience store on CR137. The store is closed.  Many convenience store shoppers will miss the store, but everyone  praises and thanks whomever is behind this environmentally responsible decision to dig those tanks out of the ground and eliminate possible ground contamination from them.  Did you know that Wellborn in its prime (first half of the 1900's)boasted half a dozen gas stations/convenience stores?  FYI "Wellborn My Hometown" , a  paperback history booklet.

January 10, 2008

Today is the first day of God's healing touch within Esther Chappell's hip.  Last evening a surgeon and operating room staff used God given skills to make ready for God's part in restoring Esther's body and her sense of well being ASAP.
Pastor Jim Messer was in the North Florida Regional hospital room & heard the doctor's plan to bring badly broken bones together with screws and a steel plate. Pastor  Jim enlisted Wellborn Methodist Church family support at Wednesday night Bible Study/Prayer Time.
I enlarge the circle of praying people involved in Esther's healing with this early Blog visit on Thursday morning.
Esther's Pastor  said she smiled just a little when she said "I'm planning to stay away from horses for a while".  She was not on top of a horse but standing alongside and by the gate so that she was sandwiched between spooked horse and gate.  Bummer :-(
Ron & Esther are the Best of the Wellborn My Hometown blogspot encouragers.
Today and all during Esther's recovery may we blog readers be the encouragers.
We count the days together anticipating her miraculous and speedy recovery.

ALLENE B. CARVER   April 1 1943 to December 29,2007

Teresa Spradley shares her aunt's personality with family and friends gathered to celebrate God's gift of time together on this earth when Allene Carver lived here too

"To lifelong friends Marilyn and Larry Norris, she was a camping companion who loved to sit around campfires and reminisce of younger days. She insisted on cooking a full course meal even when just camping.
To first cousin Thelda, she was a fishing companion. Thelda said they would load Brenda up in that lil old gold Courier pickup truck, put Brenda in the middle and pack lots of snacks and head to the fishin' hole.  They were honorary fisher-women who got into privately owned fishing holes that just ordinary fishermen couldn't get into.  (I don't think anyone would want to tell either of them that they couldn' t do something.)
To nephews she was a cool female who loved to take them fishing (like Jacob).  She'd fish like a pro! To Justin, she was his babysitter and strawberry picking buddy.  Donna Sue, shed she'd go by to pick him up after work and he'd be sitting in the middle of Aunt Allenes counter covered in bright read strawberry juice!  "Shoot, (or something close to that) It'll wash out!", she would say.
Dennis who has inherited her ability to entertain with his antics, wit and slang,   said he'd miss her reminding him how good that Sex Appeal Cologne smelt on him.  She danced with him once at the Shriners Club and noticed his cologne and complemented him.  She was gonna buy Hubert some of that! And she did...but she said "Shoot (or something like that) it don't smell like that on Hubert, just on you!"
To Doug, Michelle and their family, she and Uncle Hubert, both, were always there for them. They went thru some hard times in  the past and they would help.  They paid for Michelle to go to bus driving school and they could always depend on them for Sunday night dinner. It became tradition to have pizza with Aunt Allene and Uncle Hubert brining it out from Pizza Hut.
Personally, I remember their generosity too. I was in PomPoms in high school in the late 70's and our band was invited to march in Gimbles parade in Pennsylvania and on national TV.  We had to raise lots of money.  Daddy and Mama were struggling to raise us four kids on a self employed income and without asking for it I got a $50 check from Uncle Hubert and Aunt Allene.  That is like $250 toady.  I thanked them and they just asked me to quit shaking it long enough to wave at the camera when I marched by and make them proud!"  I guess I did for about two whole seconds anyway.
To all us nieces, Aunt Allene was our personal Paul Dean.  She inspired us to cook with big pots, no little pots in her kitchen.  She also love to bake--that was her specialty.  And if your cake was too dry, she wouldn't hesitate to tell you!  We'll all miss her coconut cakes, her coconut cream pies and her chocolate, mile high meringue pies.  We'll miss her at family reunions, she loved them and never missed if she could help it.  But she will live on thru her recipes and we certainly won't watch another Paul Dean show without thinking of her.  I  know Lynda, Melodie, and Traci have inherited her baking skills.  To Kim she was THE Rock that never moved.  She was strong and Kim will miss her most of all for Aunt Allene's strength.
She'd encourage Kim to "straighten up or hold on" in spite of the pain of losing someone you love, as she had herself.
To her double niece Cindy, she was her only equal; a co-cook and co-baker, the only person who would not get corrected by her while stirring up a meal.  They also shared a love of decorating for the holidays.  Aunt Allene was also a fishing buddy but in this category they were not equal.  Cindy said her aunt would best her many times.  Once she remembers her Aunt insisted they go to Indian Pond to fish.  Allene would not stand in one spot but had to fish around the whole pond mostly because she was too impatient and wanted to catch the first fish.  One time she convinced Cindy that they would bite off the end of that long log and urged her to walk out on it knowing Cindy hated that dark water.  Sure 'nough Cindy took one step too far and fell in only to come up sputtering "I told you I dont like that dark water".  Aunt Allene is probably still laughing over it.
To sister-in-law Betty, who was the first in-law, she was the "baby girl who got by with a lot from Grandma Katie".    Betty, (my mother) was raised by strict disciplinarian and you did not put them off when they instructed you to move.  One day Mama remembers Grandma Katie telling Aunt Allene to go feed the chickens.  An hour later Grandma asked "Allene did you feed those chickens?" "Not yet, but I am going to" would be the reply.  The day would be almost dark and Grandma would ask again about the chickens being fed.  "No I didnt get to it"  Then Grandma would cave in and say "Well, I guess I will get out there and feed them chickens..." Allene had dodged another chore.   Mama and Grandma had her hands full raising seven kids and caring for an   invalid mother. No one would have energy left at the end of a day to take on Allene's argument or temper tantrums.
Aunt Martha Rae recalls once when Aunt Allene brought the girls for an overnight.  The kids had played hard all day together and they fed them and gave icecream at least twice that day but denied themselves some.  So after bathing them all & getting them all settled in bed which was about midnight, the Moms decided to treat themselves to some ice cream in peace.  They had no longer settled into recliners with their bowls heaped with ice cream when they heard all five kids, Dale, Tracie, Kim, Gaylene and Brenda running down the hall saying "We want ice cream too!"  It turned into a Midnight Ice Cream Party for everyone.  The kids had heard the plan and sabotaged it on purpose . It made a good memory of everyone.
Aunt Martha also recalls Aunt Allene's uncanny ability to cut to the chase.  She did not put on airs. She was not an intellect and if you thought you were, you'd get sized up by her.  She said one night Dwight and Glenda Stansel were over for dinner and Aunt Allene cleaned the quail the guys had shot and was cooking it.  Dwight commenced to tell them all about this new piece of equipment that Goldkist had to remove feathers from chickens.  He described it in a scientific and intellectual  manner until Aunt Allene burst out "Awe shoot (or something like that) that aint nothin' but an old chicken plucker!"  Dwight laughed and thanked her for making it plain and simple.  She was good at that and he was good at the intellectual part. Personally I think the reason he got elected by us country folks to represent us in State government  was because he got trained by people like Allene and he must have learned alot because he got elected to two terms.
Donna Sue recounts that Aunt Barbara would tell her about Aunt Allene. Aunt Barbara lived in the day a proper lady would dress in fine clothes. Howard's little sister Allene made a contrast because she went barefoot everywhere even in the hallways of Wellborn School.  She was also the little sister who didn't appreciate the gift of a fine cashmere sweater given as a generous Christmas gift.  Donna Sue said Aunt Barbara told how she walked into the kitchen a grandma's where Aunt Allene was making biscuits only to find Allene wiping flour off her hands down the front of the new cashmere sweater!
Brother Punk will miss her happy go lucky self.  There was just no one quite like her.  To her late brothers Stafford, Howard, Willard and Joe, she might have been the youngest sister of the bunch but she was the leader of the pack for feistiness.  She could do it all and better than them.  But right now they are not complaining because she is probably in the kitchen with Grandma stirring up something good for them all to eat!'To Aunt Colleen, she was the little sister who did not have to do NOTHING!  Aunt Colleen and cousin Bobby were the ones who got stuck in the kitchen on Sundays til 3 or 4 o'clock washing all the pots and cleaning up after Grandma who'd cook for anybody and everybody that stopped by that Sunday.  But she later learned to cook and then she could do it better than Colleen often demanding to take over the spoon and stir it her way or pat out the biscuits "her" way which of course was the only way.

Do you think she had something to prove?  Do you think that when God designed her biological makeup that he knew she'd need a fightin' spirit, a tenacity to hold on when others would have given up the fight?  Do you think HE knew that she would defy the odds and live way beyond what any doctor would have predicted?  I think so!
To me Aunt Allene was much like a hummingbird that she and especially Uncle Hubert often admired together.  She, like the hummingbird, defies the typical biological makeup of birds.  Hummingbirds are only 3.5 "from the tip o the tail to the tip of the bill"  30%of their body weight is made up of flight muscles.  Proportionately, tho their brain is 4.2% of their body weight making them the bird with the largest brain in the bird kingdom.  Yet they weigh only 3-4 grams (a nickel is 5 grams) Their heart beats 1260 per minute. They are territorial and aggressive. They can fly 25-30 mph.  What fascinates me most is that they are the only bird who can fly backward, up and down, sideways or  hover in sheer space.  To hover hummingbirds move their wings in a figure eight, much like a swimmer treading water.  They can even go short distances upside down.  Their ability to hover tho is why Aunt Allene reminds me of the hummingbird...the ability to hover on this earth.  She survived the odds of a liver transplant and survived a long time on dialysis.  BY CRANKS, no one was gonna tell her when it would be over!  She defied them all.  She went fishing anyway. She went camping. She went to Biloxi.  She went to the mountains and she was determined to get in the kitchen and show you how to do it right!  which of course was HER WAY.  Up until last Friday she was territorial and aggressive like the hummingbird.  Last Friday she raised the white flag and she told Gaylene that she was not gonna pull out of this one.  She was just tired of just hovering.  She wanted to fly away.  She didn't want to enjoy food anymore.  She just wanted to rest....
To her third daughter, Lisa, and second son-in-law Jimmy, she was like a second Mom.  They'll miss her honesty, her wisdom in gardening and cooking and every other subject you brought up.  Lisa remembers that she didn't like to be disturbed either when watching her Lifetime and Food Networks.  She remembers her love of Popeyes Fried Chicken and Clam Chowder and her great dislike of hospital food.  She'd plan her own menu, which of course meant some one of us would have to sneak it in for her. And she was determined to smoke even when it meant getting locked out.  Boy, was she mad that night.  She went out for a smoke but this time the door swung shut with her outside where she could only watch those nurses sit in there doing nothing but their homework. " BY CRANKS they don't even miss me", I can hear her now.  She did eventually get discovered by a nurse who also came out for a smoke.
To Brenda, she was a mother who did not give up on her,   who refused to allow a daughter to be raised in any home other than  her own.  She dedicated her life to caring for Brenda as long as she possibly could.  When I asked Brenda what she would miss about her mama, the answer was "GOOD MOMMY".  That sums it up. She was a good Mother, She was not one to show affection but she loved to nurture others thru good food and good fellowship.
To Dearl her most patient and supportive son-in-law who shared his wife with her and Brenda as it centered around their needs, I am sure she would say a great big THANK YOU  And she'd smile a big pretty smile, the kind that often made her eyes twinkle.
To Gaylene, she would say;"I know I was your worst patient. I could be ornery...ALOT and I'd test you.  But you passed the test and with flying colors.  I didn't show you affection but I believe you knew I love you.  I could not have searched the world over for a more dedicated daughter.  YOU WERE MY HERO!  So go on a cruise and go to Savannah without me.  You deserve a much needed vacation.  I gotta go now. The biscuits are done.  See you at that great feast one day soon.
So she gives us these words to live by.
"BY CRANKS<>
You need to get back to nature and ruff it...Go camping and enjoy sittin' around the fire shooting the bull, but don't eat sandwiches and chips.  You gotta cook a Boston butt or a pork loin, baked beans, potatoe salad and the whole nine years.
And you need to keep those flowers watered or they'll die sure 'nuff.
But you don't need to clean up the kitchen after you cook.  Let somebody else do the dirty work.
AND BY CRANKS you gotta know when to hold 'em and know when to fold them.   I knew----and you'll know too".
   Love, Aunt Allene.

Allene B. Carver April 1, 1943- December 29, 2007

A   photo was taken of the Brannon family enjoying nostalgia connected with the Wellborn United Methodist Church. Parents Katie and Bob Brannon ( deceased over 20 years now ) were members of the Methodist Church  and several of their children's weddings were there.
This photo is especially treasured now because the one in blue is Allene Brannon Carver whose body was laid to rest yesterday.
Surviving Allene are her sister, Colleen B. Borklund, her brother, Wayne (Punk) Brannon and sister in law Martha Rae Brannon, and two daughters Gaylene (Dearl) Connell and Brenda Carver and a host of family and friends; so many that they needed the biggest church sanctuary (Wellborn Baptist) in town for the funeral.
Nephew Rev. Dale Brannonofficiated at the service celebrating her life. Rev. Martha Rae Brannon sang Allene's favorite "Beulah Land". Ricky and Vicky Roberts addeed "Go Rest High on That Mountain" with Ricky's guitar accompaniment.
"Some Glad Morning Ill Fly Away" was incorporated in Rev. Dale's spoken word and several stood and clapped during the familiar song.
Niece Teresa B. Spradley shared Allene as her life touched others . The eulogy& tribute to a life well lived is worth the few minutes it takes to read it. (see separate posting).

FROM DONNA JOLLEY

Happy Holidays to everyone. I pray each and every one of you had a wonderful holiday season filled with lots of fun, family, laughter, good health, and lots of photos!! I've had a busy time with spending time in Charlotte, NC with our 3 children, sadly my husband had to work and missed out on all the fun. And my brother-in-law, Don Olive, who most of you know, has spent the last 2 weeks in the hospital. We are waiting on one more test and hopefully they will send him home by this weekend. Please continue to pray for him and my sister Barb.

This week I want to tell you how to scrapbook hands on with a 2 page spread. The first step is to pick 6 ~ 8 of your photos that you want to put on a 2 page spread. These could be related photos from one event or just photos that you want to group together. As you look at your photos pick the ones that are the best. Depending on your page size (12 x 12) you could get 4 or 5 photos on a page, (8 1/2 x 11) you could probably get 2 or 3 photos on a page.

The next step is cropping your photos. Yes, it is okay to cut your photos! My favorite tool is a personal size paper cutter that you use to "trim" your photos. I like to focus in on the main subject in the picture and trim away anything left. I would never "crop" or "trim" old photos, those showing things of historical value in the background such as your house you lived in or the family car. Another thing that we never cut off is parts of those cute little babies!! Those little hands and toes will never be that little again so try and keep them in the picture.

For the traditional album maker the next part is simply arranging your photos in a layout that pleases you. Try to keep the layout simple yet eye appealing. I could go on and on about the "proper" layout, but really the best layout is one that you like to look at over and over again. Remember to leave room for your journaling.

After you arrange your photos you "mount" them or "tape" them down to your page. The best product to use is one that is acid free and safe for your photos, a double sided photo tape. Check the package to see the safety of the product for photos.

This is a traditional scrapbook page!!! Next week I'll talk more about adding color to the layout with paper and embellishments!!
